UMBILICAL CORD CARE

The umbilical cord remnant has no nerve endings, so the only feeling your infant has is the skin around the umbilicus. Use a Q-tip to put rubbing alcohol all the way around the base of the cord. This will require moving the cord to the side to get the underside done. After the alcohol is on, wave or blow air on the base of the cord so the alcohol can evaporate and dry the cord. If the cord is not detached after two weeks, we will need to see your infant in the office to help with the drying process. Also, if you notice redness around the cord or a foul odor, contact our office.
